Founder and Senior Sleep Consultant Alanna McGinn – Good Night Sleep Site

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

I became a Sleep Consultant because I wanted to offer parents sleep training support and education that I wish I had when I was a first time parent. I was there in the same sleep deprived trenches as you. I had this amazing wonderful perfect baby girl who just wouldn’t sleep. In the beginning you know this is the case, you are going to be sleep deprived and responding to your babies every need, that’s how it should be. But there comes a point and your baby becomes an age where you can start taking necessary steps to teach your baby or child proper sleep habits and that’s why I became a sleep consultant and created Good Night Sleep Site. I wanted to offer parents the support I wish I had when I was in their situation.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

I have 3 kids and I always tell parents they didn’t come out of me independent sleepers. I had to work hard at it just like most parents do. We also struggled with short naps and frequent wakings at night. Two of them are twins and they never went through sleep regressions at the same time. It’s as if they planned it! I too had to do my research and create a plan that worked for my family. Sleep training is tough! And even knowing that my children will be fine and will still love me in the morning, there were some days and nights that were harder then others. Now I can confidently say my kids are great sleepers, I mean it would be strange if they weren’t! They have lifelong sleep skills and we are all able to get the healthy sleep we need.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

Educate yourself and be ready. Once you know the age appropriate steps in sleep training your child and more importantly that sleep training is not just choosing the method, you are able to put a plan together that works best for you family. It’s important to make sure you have support throughout the process and to sit down with your partner and get on the same page. You both have to be ready to take it on and you have to both have the same goal in mind.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

There are a few, it’s tough to pick just one. I would say the two most common sleep questions are ‘how can I make my baby nap longer?’ and ‘how can I help my baby fall asleep on their own?”

Speed Round Questions!

Coffee or Tea?  Coffee
Ski Trip or Beach Vacation?  Beach Vacation. I can do without snow, period.
Favourite Ice Cream?  Presidents Choice Cookies and Cream – yum!
Favourite TV show?  Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. Basically any show you shouldn’t watch before you go to bed – ha!
Washing Dishes or Folding Laundry?  Folding laundry. Folding laundry after the kids go to bed, while watching TV equals a great night. Perhaps I need to get a life…
Favourite hobby?  I wish I had more time to craft and DIY. Love, love, love it.
When was the last time you did something for the first time?  Recently my husband and I went to Europe for a week. It was our first time in Europe together and it was the longest and farthest away from the children we’ve ever been. It was tough to leave them but such a memorable trip.

Meet The Team:

Liane300

Certified Sleep Consultant Liane Mamo – Good Night Sleep Site Ottawa – Serving all of Ottawa including Kanata and Nepean

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

I was once a sleep-deprived mom and wanted to help families get the sleep they need. I wanted to be there for families and offer guidance and more importantly, support. I experience sleep deprivation and saw first-hand how having a Good Night Sleep Site sleep plan and support can be life-changing and I was hooked to help others!

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

Absolutely! Before I became a Good Night Sleep Site consultant, I had my struggles with my son and worked with Alanna. My son always napped well, could soothe himself, however our inconsistency with approaching night wakings was our demise and slowly became habits for my son. One waking became four wakings a night and we were all tired! It’s always sleep-perfect at my house and every now and then my son still likes to challenge his sleep consultant mom!

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

Early Bedtime! Many parents underestimate the power of an early bedtime or feel the earlier their child goes to sleep, the earlier they will rise. Always remember to be flexible with bedtime based on their day. It’s the only time you can make up for missed naps, or busy days!

What is the most common sleep question asked?

How can I get my child to nap longer? Naps in general always bring up lots of questions at my sleep clinics and consultations.

Speed Round Questions!

Coffee or Tea?  Coffee
Ski Trip or Beach Vacation?  Tough one! Beach Vacation
Favourite Ice Cream?  Chapman’s Chunky Monkey frozen yogurt

Julia300

Certified Sleep Consultant Julia Walsh – Good Night Sleep Site North Carolina – Serving all of NC including Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Raleigh

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

I want to help other families overcome their sleep struggles in a positive way while using methods parents are comfortable with and understand. By supporting and educating families through this process, I hope to demonstratet he improtanc eof sleep while promoting healty sleep.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

This is what motivated me to find a way to help others. As a family, we struggled with my daughter’s sleep for almost two years! I read every book from the library and every blog on the internet, tried all of those tips, and we still struggled. Everyone was exhausted, and sometimes I’m not sure how we functioned well during the day. Finally all of the puzzle pieces came together shortly after she turned 2, and we haven’t looked back.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

My favorite sleep tip is to go right back to normal sleep routine after illness or vacations to prevent any poor sleep habits from forming. Relax a bit on vacation, when there may be missed naps, but consistency overall is a huge key to success when it comes to sleep.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

The most common sleep question is “My child used to take great naps and fall asleep independently at night with little crying. What happened?” I often find, after a little digging, that babies are learning new skills (physical or cognitive) and that the sleep disruptions are temporary. Naps and night sleep will return to “normal” once the skills are learned, and extra daily practice never hurts.

Jamie300

Certified Sleep Consultant Jamie Contarini – Good Night Sleep Site Halton – Serving Oakville, Burlington, and Milton

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

In my previous job I worked with a lot of families with young children; most of them were struggling with sleep and I wanted to help. I always referred them to Good Night Sleep Site. I joined the Good Night Sleep Site team because I wanted to be part of a team that not only customizes a plan for their clients – but supports them through the implementation of the plan as well.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

Yes, but at first I didn’t realize it was an issue. My first son napped 38 minutes to the dot – he was happy, so I thought that was just all he needed. He also had early morning wake ups but I thought that some kids were early risers (by early I mean 5:30am). I worked with Alanna and saw very quickly that he wasn’t an early riser or short napper and he started sleeping until 7:00am and having 90 minute naps.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

“Be consistent”. Often parents will try to make positive changes for their baby but they don’t stick with it long enough for things to improve. We need to be consistent so that we don’t confuse the babies. Remember that you are changing something that they have been doing for a while – give them time to adjust.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

“Could it be that my baby is just a bad sleeper?” To which I always respond “No, she just needs the space and time to learn to sleep on her own”

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

It was a natural progression in my career in working with babies and small children and experiencing first hand how difficult sleep deprivation can be, I knew I wanted to help other families with their struggles.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

Yes! For the first 7 months of my daughter’s little life we hardly slept until we put a proper schedule in place.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

Early bedtime!  It is one of the easiest and most effective ways to combat a sleep debt and can be the solution to many sleep issues.  Don’t fear the early bedtime!

Laura225

Certified sleep consultant Laura Armstrong – Good Night Sleep Site Toronto – Serving all of Toronto including Scarborough

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

When Norah was 7 months old and we hadn’t slept a night since she was born, we were at our whits end. I hired a sleep consultant and she was not what we were looking for. We (Dan and I) felt defeated BUT basically took the bull by the horns, put together our own plan and helped Norah get on track when it came to sleeping. Once it was over, we know that we had worked amazingly well as a team but knew that if we just had someone to do all the leg work for us, support us and just tell us what to do, it would have been so much easier. We really needed someone to give us permission to go against out parental instincts and tell us what we were doing was right (or wrong!) I wanted to be that for other families. I wanted to help them and support them during a time where everything just seems way too hard.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

When Norah was 7 months old and we hadn’t slept a night since she was born, we were at our whits end. We were sleep deprived, miserable and obsessed with just trying to get her to sleep. We needed some sort of “normality” back in our lives.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

Patience and realistic expectations. Parents need to understand that like with anything, change doesn’t happen over night. You need to be patience and not feel defeated, discouraged if you don’t see instant results. They need to notice the little changes, and celebrate those in the beginning.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

If all the books say that this should only take 3-4 days, why are you telling us we need to put aside 2 weeks? Habits are tough to break. Does it take you 3-4 days to break a habit?

Lori_300

Certified Sleep Consultant Lori Vachon – Good Night Sleep Site Northeastern Ontario – Serving all of NE Ontario including Sudbury, North Bay, and Timmins

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

I became a Good Night Sleep Site consultant because I wanted to be able to offer sleep support to families up north and saw that there was a gap in services up here.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

I definitely had to work at getting both my girls to sleep at night. I had a harder time with my first because we just didn’t know what we were doing and were so inconsistent. The second time around I thought would be easier but she was a whole different challenge.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

I love how simply trying an earlier bedtime works so well for so many families. I remember when I first discovered it with my first daughter how much easier bedtime became.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

I seem to have a lot of moms asking when they can stop feeding their baby at night.

Certified Sleep Consultant Emily O’Gorman – Good Night Sleep Site Wellington County

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

Sleep is a fundamental necessity of life, yet so many families struggle with getting enough. I want to educate and encourage families that they can get enough sleep and bedtime does not need to be a battle every might or nap! I want to share my knowledge and help other families with some of the same struggles I had with my son.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

YES! My son was “colic” and my husband and I were desperate to get our son to sleep anyway we could. Unfortunately, we created sleep crutches (rocking, bouncing, nursing) and felt backed into a corner and it felt like we would never sleep again. That is when we reached out to Good Night Sleep Site.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

My favourite tip to offer families is to have a consistent routine in your child’s day. Your child is so much smarter than you probably realize (right now). Having consistency keeps the guessing out of the method. Your child will be able to pick up certain cues, which then they will naturally prepare themselves for the next part of their day, like sleep, which makes bedtime less chaotic and prevents your child from becoming over-tired.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

How do I get my child to sleep better? I hear this all the time! I tell the families that ask me this to be more specific and ask themselves “sleep better how?”. I do tell families in a nut shell that if they are considering sleep training, to prepare to be consistent in with whatever method that they choose and that developing a sleep and awake pattern that is predictable for baby/child is an excellent place to start.

Certified Sleep Consultant Kim Valade – Good Night Sleep Site Okanagan

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

I love sleep and when I was pregnant with my son, I was terrified that I would never sleep again. I read book after book about sleep, determined that I wouldn’t lose any more sleep than necessary. What I found was that it’s not easy and it can be downright confusing. When I found out sleep consulting existed, that I could help people navigate the mystery that is baby and child sleep, I knew I had found my next calling. It combines my passion for helping people and my love of sleep.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

I definitely have. Despite all my preparation, I quickly found out that it’s not that easy. It took a lot of work and it was far from perfect, but my son and I muddled through it together and he came out a pretty good sleeper. We still have some challenges that pop up here and there as he grows and develops, but he has the basics of sleep figured out and as result, it’s not hard to get back on track.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

Early bedtime is so important! When I first heard about how early babies should be going to bed, I was horrified and I was convinced that if my son went to bed early, he would then wake up before the crack of dawn. I gave it a try anyways and I was amazed at the difference. He was sleeping longer and better at night, his naps improved and he was better rested overall. As a bonus, I didn’t have to wake up as early as I had feared. Now, as a pre-schooler, early bedtime still applies. He continues to sleep well, and I get the evenings to myself.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

“How do I get my baby to sleep through the night?”

Certified Sleep Consultant Stephanie Covey – Good Night Sleep Site Nova Scotia

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

After many years of nursing and the birth of our first child, I decided that I wanted to do something a little different that would allow me to spend more time at home away from the travel and the shift work. I still had a strong desire to help people and after we decided to hire a sleep consultant for our little one and realized how life changing it was, I decided this was what I wanted to do! What better gift to give a family than sleep.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

Oh yes!! As a new mom I read so many books and articles on sleep and proceeded to get more and more frustrated and confused. As our little bundle of joy seemed to sleep less and naps became virtually non-existent, I was sleep deprived and frustrated. I was supposed to be loving this time and I came to dread naps and bedtime knowing that it would be a struggle with me rocking/nursing/bouncing my little one to sleep only to have her wake immediately when I would try to put her down. I no longer had any time in the evenings as her bedtime became mine as it was the only way she would sleep. Finally, at 5 months, we decided to take action! We hired a sleep consultant and while I was nervous and apprehensive at the start, it was THE BEST thing we ever did We often joke that we would pay that money ten times over; it gave us our lives back and we were a happy, well-rested family.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

My favorite sleep tip is around naps. If naps are off then it can affect the whole day and throw it off. Often parents don’t realize there are optimal times for their little ones to sleep that will allow them to get the best quality sleep 🙂

What is the most common sleep question asked?

The most common question I get is around night wakes. Many parents still struggle with night wakings/feeds and how to best their little ones to best sleep through the night.

Certified Sleep Consultant Jennifer Gilman – Good Night Sleep Site New Jersey

Why did you become a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant?

I became a Good Night Sleep Site Sleep Consultant because I have a strong passion for children, parenting, and education. By helping families get a good night’s sleep, I can help children and parents thrive in their everyday lives. I have seen how life changing it is for families to go from being sleep deprived and struggling to well-rested and happy.

Have you had a personal sleep struggle with your family?

Yes, my family has experienced a few different sleep problems when my children were in the infant and toddler stages. The worst of it was when my youngest child (at 17 months old) started refusing to nap and waking for the day at 4:30 AM! I tried all I could to fix the problem on my own, and eventually turned to a sleep consultant a friend of mine had used. The sleep consultant helped solve my toddler’s sleep issues and our life changed—for the better! At that point, the sleep “switch” was flipped for me and it became a focus for me.

What is your favourite sleep tip and why?

My favorite sleep tip is definitely early bedtime. It’s easy for adults to forget how little our children are and how much sleep they actually need. An early bedtime really is wonderful for everyone in the family—it gets children the sleep they need and parents some time alone in the evenings.

What is the most common sleep question asked?

How do I get my child to fall asleep on his/her own?
