World Sleep Day – Why Aren’t Canadians Sleeping? – Your Morning

This post was created in partnership with Philips Canada

I had the pleasure of partnering with Philips Canada for World Sleep Day. World Sleep Day is being held on March 15th and is an annual event, organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of World Sleep Society and intends to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, which includes medicine, sleep education, and speaks on better prevention and management of sleep disorders.

Sleep deprivation and disorders are becoming a worldwide epidemic and as a global leader in health technology, Philips strives to help the world understand that good sleep, like good nutrition and exercise, is a key pillar of nurturing a healthy lifestyle.

In honor of World Sleep Day 2019, Philips executed its annual sleep survey, which looks at the impact of sleep on our lives and the behaviours people adopt to improve sleep quality. Through these findings, Philips aims to get one step closer to its goal of addressing global sleep issues, and this is the first year where Canada is included in 1 of the 12 countries surveyed.

In total, 11,006 people participated.

  • 51 percent of respondents were male / 49 percent were female
  • 85 percent of respondents were between the ages of 18 and 54

What we found from the study was that:

  • Awareness of an individual’s sleep health is rising but a good night’s sleep is still hard to maintain
  • We are willing to try easy solutions to help us sleep better but refrain from seeking professional help

If we want to really get to the root of our sleep issues we need to be willing to better our sleep health through easy steps but also more meaningful ways as well.
