🛑 MYTH: MY BABY JUST DOESN’T NEED THAT MUCH S 🛑 MYTH: MY BABY JUST DOESN’T NEED THAT MUCH SLEEP 🟢 THE TRUTH: Nap struggles and bedtime battles are the two most common issues I hear amongst parents with babies. At some point parents just decide that their baby is that baby that just doesn’t need to nap and can stay up and watch the Late Show with mom and dad. I’m here to tell you that your baby needs much more sleep in a 24-hour period than you do. Your baby needs up to 14-15 hours of sleep per day up to 1 year of age and up to 12 hours a day for toddlers. It’s important to offer the quantity of sleep that your baby needs to promote better cognitive ability, hand-eye coordination, better behavior and mood, and stronger immune system. Your 18 Month Old and Sleep //⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What’s Going On:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After having gone through the 2 to 1 nap transition, your toddler is now about to enter the 18 month sleep regression. They may refuse to lay down for their nap, spending their nap time throwing stuffed animals out of the crib or just jumping around. This, like all other sleep regressions, is due to a new skill. This skill is independence. A wonderful skill, but in the beginning it can be frustrating as they exert a stronger will for their desires.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What You Can Do:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your sweet toddler may be learning that they have the ability to speak their mind, but now is the time to set the boundaries and show them the importance of sleep. Keep offering them their full nap. Stick it out! If their nap is short or skipped, offer the early bedtime. It will help to combat the lack of daytime sleep and help to avoid night wakings and early mornings. The nap will come back and you will soon pass through this phase, with consistency.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
