Essential Oils: A Soothing Addition to Healthy Sleep

Healthy sleep is vital for a healthy child and family.  Like many families our family struggled with our children’s sleep. We worked, did our research and implemented a great plan to help our second child sleep well.  He was sleeping through the night, but we still had a restless night here and there. It was the use of essential oils that added just that little something to help him sleep just a bit better.

The keys to helping your child obtain healthy sleep lie in a soothing bedtime routine, an age appropriate schedule, an independent sleeper, a safe sleep environment and a sleep conducive environment.  Essential oils can be a helpful addition in creating a soothing bedtime routine, peaceful sleep environment with deep feelings of relaxation and calmness.

Why Are Essential Oils Helpful For Sleep?

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for their calming and soothing properties that can help relax the body and mind. The unique properties found in certain essential oils make them useful for promoting an environment that is conducive for sleep.

There are a wide variety of essential oils, and each oil has its own set of benefits. With such a variety of oils that help sleep, individuals can find an oil that works best for them.  Some chemical ingredients can give soothing or calming properties, while other ingredients can make an oil cleansing, cooling, or invigorating.  Each person’s needs and rituals are a little bit different when it comes to sleep, which makes essential oils a useful agent for creating a quality sleeping environment.

When looking for essential oils for your family, it is important to know that your aromatherapy essential oils are pure therapeutic grade. Some store bought essential oils can have unwanted ingredients like fillers, pesticides, chemicals, fragrance and other synthetic additives, which don’t have the same healing benefits as pure oil.

Lavender

Lavender has been used and cherished for centuries for its unmistakable aroma and myriad benefits. Roman Chamomile grows close to the ground, reaching only up to a foot in height. It has gray-green leaves, flowers that resemble a daisy, and smells like apple. While the most common use of chamomile is in teas, Roman Chamomile can also be found in face creams, drinks, hair dyes, shampoos, and perfumes. How to Use Essential Oils with Children?

Aromatically 

Any of the essential oils can be used aromatically, and there are great benefits to using them this way. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of aroma on reducing anxious feelings, alleviating stress, and improving mood. Placing an essential oil diffuser near your bed or in your bedroom will allow you to breathe in the relaxing aroma of the oil as you drift off to sleep.  You can create your own bedtime diffuser blends by mixing a few essential oils together.

Adding essential oils to a warm bath can help calm and comfort your little one’s body and mind before bed.  Simply add a few drops of an essential oil to a warm bath.

Bedding

Another simple way to enjoy the aromatic benefits of essential oils and promote quality sleep is by applying oils to your pillows and bedding. Combine a few drops of an essential oil and a few ounces of water in a spray bottle and spritz the combination over your pillows and bedding. Your little one will be surrounded by the relaxing, comforting aroma of essential oils.

Topically

When applying on your child’s skin, always use a carrier oil and dilute appropriately when using essential oils on babies and children.   Carrier oils help dilute the very concentrated essential oils.  They help aid in distributing the oils evenly, and they prevent the essential oils from evaporating too quickly.  A great way to incorporate this into your bedtime routine is through massage.  This can be very soothing and comforting for your child.

doTerra offers a Fractionated Coconut Oil, which is an absorbent and light carrier oil that will help to increase essential oil distribution while leaving skin feeling smooth and soft.  You may also use olive oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, and jojoba oil. Dilution ratios are as follows:

Baby: approximately 1-2 drops per 2 tablespoons of carrier oil,

Toddler: 1-2 drops per 1/2-1 teaspoon for a toddler or preschooler.

Apply to the bottom of your little one’s feet, behind the ears and on the chest.

My Family’s Bedtime Routine

My kids love their nightly oil routine.  I rub a couple of drops of lavender on the bottoms of their feet, chest and the backs of their earlobes.  I then put a drop of Frankincense into my hands, rub together and massage into their foreheads and scalps.  The massage itself relaxes both of my kiddies into a peaceful slumber.  Afterwards, I diffuse with my own personal favorite blends.

Take it from me, I had my share of nightmares in the first several months (10 months to be exact), of my second baby’s life.  After being consistent with my sleep routines as well as utilizing essential oils, my husband and I found our own form of zen.
