On November 1st, the time of use rates change for all of Halton. Here are 3 tips for saving money while you sleep and getting the most out of the off peak rates.
Use a programmable thermostat:
Using a programmable thermostat can really help with decreasing your bill. Be sure to set it to drop the temperature before you go to bed. Not only will it save you money but everyone sleeps better when it is cooler. We lower ours to 19 at night and the rooms still feel like 20. Set the furnace to come on before you wake or 6:30am at the latest so that things heat up before the price spikes.
Run your dishwasher at night:
If you are like my husband, you don’t want to hear the dishwasher running. Most dishwashers come with an option to delay the start time by 2, 4 or 6 hours. Set it up before you go to bed and let it run while you sleep. You will be using off peak hydro and you will have clean dishes when you wake in the morning.
Save your laundry for the weekend:
I realize that this is not always an option, but if you can save the bulk of your laundry for the weekend then you will be using off peak rates starting at 7:00pm on Friday night. If you need to run a few loads during the week then you can use the timer on the washer so that you don’t forget to run it and then swap it into the dryer when it is finished (or first thing in the morning before you get the kids up).
