Did you know that approximately 76,000 moms will get a Post-Partum Mood Disorder (PPMD) in Canada this year? Adjusting to life with a new baby is challenging and often overwhelming. Good Night Sleep Site is passionate about sleep for so many reasons, one important one being how the lack of sleep plays a role in postpartum depression (PPD) and maternal mental health. While we love helping babies, toddlers and kids sleep well, it is equally important to help new moms get the sleep they need too.
We are so excited to announce that Good Night Sleep Site is partnering with Life With A Baby to create sleep workshops in your community and also we will be participating in their Mpower: Walk, Ride, Run for Maternal Mental Health in an effort to raise funds and support for Maternal Mental Health in Canada, and we are inviting YOU to join us.

Here’s How You Can Participate
- Register for Good Night Sleep Site’s Walk in Partnership with Life With A Baby. Register Now.
- Make a donation in support of Maternal Mental Health and ask your friends and family to support you. Qualifying donations will receive a charitable tax receipt.
- Come out (and grab your friends too!) for a walking sleep clinic.
- Date – Thursday, May 10th, 2018
- Time – 11:00 AM
- Oakville Place Mall – Oakville, Ontario. We will be walking approximately 2.5 km’s outside, starting from the southwest corner of the mall parking lot, which is where the lower level entrance to The Bay is located. Find a parking spot close to North Service Road East (not Leighland Avenue).
- Rainy Day Plan! Check back on the day of the walk in the case of inclement weather. If it is raining, we will move the walk and sleep clinic inside. Meet at the Starbucks in the centre of the lower level of the mall.

Why Sleep Matters For Maternal Mental Health
Did you know that one of the most common symptoms of PPD is insomnia? Many women begin to accumulate a sleep debt in their second or third trimester of pregnancy, meaning they go into motherhood already exhausted. Studies show us that sleep support for insomnia during pregnancy helps reduce the severity of PPD symptoms at 2 and 6 weeks after delivery and that there is a direct correlation between maternal sleep quality (not quantity) and severity of PPD symptoms.
Not getting quality sleep time increases both your risk of getting PPD and the severity of the symptoms if you do get it. While increasing sleep quality (and quantity) is not a magic ‘cure-all’ for PPD, it can help ease the symptoms, so postpartum sleep support for better quality sleep should be the goal of every new mom.
