Scare away the bad dreams with these bedtime crafts for Halloween

Bedtime IdeasWith Halloween around the corner, the theme is everything ghoulish. In stores and your child’s school ghosts and witches are being hung on the walls, and even your child’s favourite cartoon character is celebrating the scary holiday. Suddenly things start going bump in the night for your little one and a common question I’m asked this time of year is what do I do if my child has a nightmare?

We know I like to get crafty so I’ve put together some fun Halloween sleep crafts that both you and your child can create to keep the nightmares at bay.


Catch the Bad Dreams Before They Happen

Dream Catcher

I saw this felt spider web at the craft store and new exactly what I had to use it for. Dreamcatchers are made to catch all the bad dreams and only filter through the good dreams and thoughts. Have your little one help you create their own dreamcatcher and hang it by their bed or in their window. Explain to them that when the sunlight hits it the bad dreams disappear and the good dreams travel down the feathers and through to them.


Take the Scare Away


There are so many Halloween crafts available now that depict scary monsters as simply adorable. Having them colour and glue these precious little “friends” themselves breaks down the fear and creates fun in its place. How can you have bad dreams about these little cuties?


Give Them Back the Power


Sometimes all they need is that little added strength to get them through the night. Superheroes can handle any fear and these cute little masks can be the perfect disguise against any vampire or werewolf.

*Make sure you take the masks away once the child goes to bed for safety reasons.


Rewrite Their Dreams

Halloween Story

Whenever my kids have bad dreams we always try and rewrite the endings. Rather than the monster scaring you maybe it becomes your friend. If your child is old enough, start their own storybook where they can create their own happy ending stories where the creatures are their play friends rather than evil foes.


Spray the Scare Away


I don’t like proving that there is anything to be scared of. I don’t look under beds or in closets because all I’m showing my kids is that there is something to look for. But let’s get real, sometimes we can use the above tactics or reassure and calm them down and then we need to pull out the big guns. And by that I mean good old Monster Be-Gone Spray. Fill a water bottle with water and a few drops of lavender and mist their room before they head to bed to banish those monsters for good.

While it’s a fun holiday filled with dress-up and candy, Halloween can be a tough time for children so get creative and think of ways to take the scare away and the keep the fun around.

    I am struggling with my two year old staying in bed. He slept great in his crib down at 7 left the room slept for 10-11 hours. Now since moving him to his toddler bed he is up 2-3x a night getting up and sometimes staying up for 2-3 hours! I’m an exhausted mom who needs help
